An external Defibrillator - the "LifeVest®" is an alternative to the implanted ICD

For cases of temporary diseases (e.g. myocarditis) or with an uncertain diagnosis, an external ICD (implantable cardioverter-defibrillator) can be worn as a vest.
As with a pacemaker, the implantable cardioverter defibrillator is located under the skin. The ICD monitors continually the heart functions and can intervene should a dangerous arrhythmia occur. What differentiates the ICD from an ordinary pacemaker is its main function; the ability to deliver an electric shock (defibrillation), which reestablishes a normal rhythm in case of ventricular fibrillation and an ensuing decay of pulse. If, for example, after a fainting spell (syncope) there may be uncertainty as to the explanation of how it happened - whether cardiac arrhythmia was the cause, or whether there is a undetected risk of sudden cardiac death in the context of a disease - until this issue is resolved, it is prudent to supply the patient with an external defibrillator.
The LifeVest® is a special external defibrillator, which can be worn as a vest. It consists of a control unit, which also contains a battery pack, the defibrillator paddles on the back and chest and a textile component, which aims to ensure the permanent contact of the electrodes with the body.

After surviving sudden cardiac death (SCD), it is not always necessary for the patient to be supplied with a permanent defibrillator (ICD). After an acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), patients with severe coronary artery disease waiting for bypass surgery, or before a coronary intervention, may reduce the temporarily increased risk of SCD with such a vest. Once the cause for the increased SCD risk is eliminated (e.g. implantation of stents, or bypass surgery), the vest can then be removed. The need for a permanent ICD device is possibly no longer necessary.

We are glad to assist you or your patients: our medical team at the Rhythm Center here at the Isar Heart Center is always available to advise you on all aspects relating to an ICD or a LifeVest.  We examine all difficult cases with an unclear diagnosis together with our cardiac surgeons in the framework of our regular heart conference. You can reach us 24 hours a day via our emergency phone number.
