Assoc. Prof. (McGill Univ. Montréal) Dr. med. Sven Waßmann is a medical specialist in internal medicine / cardiology, specializing in interventional cardiology. Professor Sven Waßmann finished his studies of medicine in Göttingen in 1996, and he earned his doctorate from the Georg August University in Göttingen in 1998. He started his medical career at Clinic III for Internal Medicine, specializing in cardiology, angiology, and pneumology (director: Professor E. Erdmann) at the University Clinic of Cologne, where he worked in the clinics and as a scientist from 1997 to 2000. In 2000 he transferred along with Professor Böhm to the University Clinic of Saarland (Clinic for Internal Medicine III, cardiology, angiology, internal intensive care, director: Professor G. Böhm, M.D.), where he continued his clinical work, in particular in the area of invasive cardiology, as well as basic and clinical research. In 2005, Professor Waßmann was accredited as a medical specialist with a medical focus on internal medicine and cardiology. That same year he transferred as a senior physician with Professor Nickenig to the Medical Clinic II (cardiology, pneumology, angiology) of the University Clinic Bonn (director: Professor G. Nickenig, M.D.). There he was director of the heart catheter laboratory and the vascular biological research group until 2008, and then deputy director of the clinic. While at the heart catheter laboratory, he specialized in the performance of complex coronary surgery, in particular involving diseases of the main artery, as well as the application of an occluder system and percutaneous procedures in the case of structural heart and cardiac valve diseases.
 
Over the course of his career so far, Professor Waßmann has performed more than 5,000 cardiac catheterization procedures and more than 3,500 coronary interventions, percutaneous interventions in the case of structural heart diseases, and occluder system implantations. He qualified as a professor and received his license to teach internal medicine from the University of Saarland in 2006. In 2008, he was appointed to the research chair of vascular medicine at the distinguished McGill University in Montréal, Canada, and at the same time he was the chief interventional cardiologist at Jewish General Hospital in Montréal. Since late 2011, Professor Waßmann has been the director of the Cardiology Clinic and Internal Intensive Care at the Isar Hospital in Munich, specializing in interventional cardiology at the Isar Cardiac Centre, and he still is an associate professor at McGill University Montréal and the director of the vascular biological research laboratory at the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research in Montréal.
 
Professor Waßmann's medical focus is on interventional cardiology, in other words, the treatment of the constriction of the coronary arteries, the treatment of heart attacks with balloons and stents, heart defects with occluders, diseased cardiac valves with artificial heart valves and clips inserted with a catheter. He was the initiator of the TAVI program at the University Clinic in Bonn, and he worked at the McGill University in Montréal in the TAVI program. In the study group of Professor Böhm, as well as subsequently with Professor Nickenig, Professor Waßmann worked on vascular changes and repair mechanisms in cases of arteriosclerosis, and on new therapy procedures for the treatment of high blood pressure. At the Isar Medical Centre, Professor Waßmann established the new procedure for the treatment of therapy-resistant high blood pressure in the heart catheter laboratory with a renal artery denervation based on a catheter ablation.
Professor Waßmann is an active member of various international professional associations. He is, among others, a fellow and nucleus member of the Working Group Cardiovascular Pharmacology and Drug Therapy of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC), and a fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC). His scientific works on primarily vascular issues have been published in esteemed professional journals and have received several awards. He participated as a principal investigator in a number of monocentric and multicentric studies (pharmacotherapy, medical products).
