Pacemaker Implantation

The pacemaker surgery is a minor surgical procedure that can usually be performed under local anesthesia.

The pacemaker implantation is a small-scale surgical procedure which can usually be performed with a local anesthesia.  Through a skin incision in the depression below the collarbone (lower supraclavicular fossa) pacemaker electrodes (probes) are advanced through a vein to the heart. Their positioning in the heart is checked and adjusted by means of X-ray fluoroscopy. Once the electrodes are anchored correctly in the heart, a control measurement is made in the operating room to test their conductivity and function.

Then, the actual pacemaker unit is connected to the probes and the aggregate (often mistakenly referred to as a battery) is implanted under the skin in a specially prepared pocket. The skin is then closed and sutured. The insertion of a drainage outlet may be required in order to divert bleeding to the outside. Before the patient is released from the hospital, the pacemaker is tested and adapted to the specific needs of the patient.

When the service-life of the pacemaker has reached its end, and the battery power has fallen below a certain limit, the entire unit must be replaced. This is also done under local anesthesia. The original incision area can be used again, so that no additional scar is formed. Since the pocket already exists, the replacement of the pacemaker is a modest operation. When a unit is changed, sometimes it may be necessary to modify the new unit’s functionality. If necessary, the probe must also be replaced, or additional probes must be implanted.
